Fall Visiting Guide: Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Visit the Peninsula

Here's a secret most visitors don't know: September through November delivers the warmest, clearest weather of the year. Add Stanford football, the iconic Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival, harvest abundance, and golden foliage — and you have the Peninsula's best season hiding in plain sight.

The weather secret

Most visitors assume summer is the best time to visit the Bay Area. They're wrong. The Peninsula's Mediterranean climate delivers its warmest, sunniest weather in September and October — not July and August. Summer here is often foggy and cool (there's real truth to the old saying about the coldest winter being a San Francisco summer). But starting in September, the fog retreats, skies clear, and temperatures regularly hit the mid-70s to 80s.

September
79°F
Clear skies, warm days, cool evenings. The fog is gone.
October
73°F
Golden light, Indian summer days can hit 80s+. Often the warmest month.
November
64°F
Cooling down, occasional rain late month. Still mostly pleasant.
The insider advantage: Fall means fewer crowds too. Restaurant reservations are easier. Trail parking is less competitive. And shoulder-season pricing may offer savings versus peak summer — though Stanford football weekends (especially Parents' Weekend and Homecoming) drive strong demand.

Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

The signature fall event on the Peninsula — one of the most iconic harvest festivals in the country.

🎃 Don't Miss

Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

Main Street, downtown Half Moon Bay (between Mill & Spruce Streets) · ~30–40 min via Hwy 92

FREE admission 3rd weekend Oct 200K+ visitors 9 AM–5 PM Sat & Sun

Over 250 artist and craft booths. Four live music stages. The champion giant pumpkin from the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off (winning pumpkins regularly exceed 2,000 pounds). The Great Pumpkin Parade on Saturday at noon — pumpkin-themed floats, marching bands, vintage cars, and costumed community members. Pumpkin carving ($10/pumpkin), costume contest, kids' activities. And pumpkin-flavored everything: pie, soup, ale, bread. Try the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company's Pumpkin Harvest Ale — a local seasonal favorite.

Beat the crowds: Go early (9 AM) to avoid the worst crowds and parking. Better yet, arrive Saturday morning and combine the festival with a pumpkin patch or coastal hike. The drive over Highway 92 is beautiful but becomes very congested by late morning. Consider leaving by 2 PM to beat the return traffic.

Fall foliage on the Peninsula

Let's set expectations: the Bay Area is not Vermont. The foliage here is subtler, peaks later (mid-October through late November), and requires knowing where to look. But in the right spots, the colors are genuinely beautiful — golden ginkgos, scarlet Japanese maples, and amber oaks against a backdrop of year-round green.

🍂 Best Foliage

Filoli Estate & Gardens

Woodside (~15 min)

The single best fall foliage destination on the Peninsula. Filoli's 16 acres of formal gardens feature Japanese maples, cherries, Virginia creepers, hawthorns, ginkgos, and fruit trees that turn vivid reds, oranges, and golds from late November through early December. The closest thing to a New England fall experience in the Bay Area. Admission ~$25; reservations recommended. Also hosts Taste of Fall (artisan marketplace, cider tastings, orchard tours) and Nightfall (spooky nighttime trail experience — tickets sell out, buy 2–4 weeks early).

Downtown Los Altos ~15 min

A foliage photographer's dream. State Street is lined with Chinese pistache trees that turn brilliant scarlet in November. Go in early morning when low sun lights up the leaves. Combine with a stroll through charming downtown shops and cafés.

Stanford Campus ~5 min

Scattered deciduous trees (maples, oaks, ginkgos) provide pockets of color against sandstone buildings and palm-lined avenues. The Oval, Main Quad, and Cantor Arts Center area are good spots. Not a major foliage destination but a beautiful autumn walk.

Rancho San Antonio Preserve Cupertino · ~20 min

Maples, oaks, and persimmon trees turn colors Oct–Nov. Deer Hollow Farm adds a harvest atmosphere. Multiple hiking trails framed by autumn foliage. Free parking (arrive early weekends).

Fall foliage day trips

Napa Valley ~90 min

Vineyards turn golden and red Oct–Nov. Silverado Trail is the quintessential fall drive. Combine with wine tasting. Yountville is especially beautiful.

Hakone Estate & Gardens Saratoga · ~25 min

Japanese garden with stunning maple color in November. Moon Festival events in early October.

SF Botanical Garden ~45 min via Caltrain

Moon Viewing Garden has spectacular Japanese maples. Take Caltrain + Muni.

Timing guide: Bay Area fall foliage peaks mid-October through late November — later than most of the country. For the best colors at Filoli and Los Altos, aim for mid-to-late November. For Napa vineyards, late October through early November is ideal.

Stanford football season

Stanford football transforms the campus on game-day Saturdays. Even if you're not a die-hard fan, the tailgating, the campus atmosphere, and the experience of watching a game at Stanford Stadium is quintessential fall on the Peninsula.

🏈 5 Min Away

Stanford Stadium

625 Nelson Rd, Stanford (~5 min from property)

ACC Conference 5–6 home games/season ~$25–75+ tickets Late Aug–Late Nov

Tickets at gostanford.com. Stanford joined the ACC starting with the 2024 season. Typically 5–6 home games per season, mostly Saturdays. Prices are remarkably affordable compared to other Power 5 programs.

The game day experience

Tailgating

Parking lots and grass areas around the stadium come alive hours before kickoff. Families, alumni, and fans with grills, tents, and TVs. The atmosphere is festive and family-friendly — more wine-and-cheese than the rowdy tailgating of bigger programs.

The campus walk

Park away from the stadium and walk through campus. The Palm Drive approach, Main Quad, and Hoover Tower are beautiful on a fall afternoon.

The Band

Stanford's Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (LSJUMB) is famously irreverent and entertaining. They're half the show.

Post-game

Downtown Palo Alto (University Ave) fills with fans after the game. Great energy for dinner and drinks.

Perfect Saturday: Tailgate in the afternoon → watch the game → walk through campus in the golden fall light → dinner on University Ave. The stadium is literally 5 minutes from our property.
