🎄 Peninsula Tradition

Christmas Tree Lane, Palo Alto

1700 & 1800 blocks of Fulton Street, Palo Alto (~10 min)

FREE Mid Dec–Dec 31 Nightly 5–10 PM Since 1940

The Peninsula's most beloved holiday tradition. It started during a bridge game at Judge Edward Hardy's Fulton Street home, and every year since (except one during WWII), residents have decorated their homes and lined the street with 72 small Douglas Firs strung with multicolored lights. The city changes the streetlamp covers from white to red. Each home has a unique display — nativity scenes, trains, retro/vintage displays, interactive elements, and treats for kids. Thousands walk or drive through each season.

Walk, don't drive for the best experience. Park on a nearby street and stroll. Go on a weeknight to avoid the biggest crowds. Pair with dinner on University Avenue — just minutes away.

Holidays at Filoli

86 Cañada Road, Woodside (~15 min) · Late Nov through early Jan

Filoli is the Bay Area's premier holiday destination — a 654-acre estate transformed into a winter wonderland with three distinct experiences:

☀️ Gilded (Daytime)

Tour the elegantly decorated 54,000+ sq ft Georgian revival mansion and formal gardens. 130 wreaths, 108 Christmas trees, and 7,000+ individually hung ornaments. Grand rooms decorated in seasonal themes, garlands, festive wreaths. Daytime 10 AM–3:30 PM (last entry 2 PM). ~$41.

🧚 Thistlewyck (Daytime)

New in 2025: an enchanting holiday village in the redwood forest. Miniature fairy houses and Hobbit-like structures with model trains at child's height and three levels above. Hot chocolate, post office for letters to Santa, Elf Emporium for dress-up, and Rose Wonders — Filoli's permanent 27-foot troll with a staircase inside leading to her hands. Included with daytime ticket.

🌙 Holiday Lights (Nighttime)

The signature experience. 16 acres of formal gardens with 350,000+ twinkling lights across 6,000+ strands stretching more than 28 miles. A 210-foot-long tunnel of light, sparkling trees, illuminated paths. Fire pits, mulled wine, cocktails, seasonal treats, holiday music. Upgrade options: private fire pits, Ballroom Champagne Lounge. ~$45 adults, ~$35 ages 5–17. Timed entry 4–9 PM.

Evening tickets sell out — especially weekends in December. Book 2–4 weeks ahead. Weeknight visits are less crowded and still magical. Some visitors prefer rainy nights when the gardens are nearly empty and lights reflect off wet surfaces. Dress warmly; Woodside gets chilly.
