Off-leash dog parks

Palo Alto has four dedicated off-leash parks, plus Menlo Park's Willow Oaks. Conditions vary significantly — from maintained grass at Peers Park to gravel and dirt at Hoover. Here's what you actually need to know.

⭐ Largest & Most Popular

Mitchell Park Dog Park Palo Alto

~8 min 🐕 Off-leash Grass / packed dirt 0.82 acres + small dog area

600 E Meadow Dr, Palo Alto

The largest and most popular dog park in Palo Alto. The 2024 renovation expanded the park significantly and added a dedicated 0.10-acre small dog area with its own fencing. Double-gated entry, water station, benches, waste receptacles, 5-foot chain-link fencing. Sits within the larger 21-acre Mitchell Park complex — playgrounds, walking paths, sports fields, and the Mitchell Park Library. Sunrise to sunset daily.

Insider tip: The city reseeds the grass annually by closing half the park for a few months — the open half can get dusty by late summer. Visit in spring for best conditions.

Peers Park Dog Park Palo Alto

~7 min 🐕 Off-leash Maintained grass 0.7 acres + small dog area

1899 Park Blvd, Palo Alto

Opened in 2018, Peers is the newest and nicest dog park in Palo Alto. The maintained grass surface, mature shade trees, and larger footprint make this the most comfortable option for both dogs and owners. Separate areas for large and small dogs. Water fountain.

Best surface: Peers has the best grass of any Palo Alto dog park. If your dog is a light-colored breed that shows dirt, this is the one.

Willow Oaks Dog Park Menlo Park — Closest

~6 min 🐕 Off-leash Grass

Willow Oaks Park, Coleman Ave, Menlo Park

The closest off-leash option to the property and Menlo Park's primary dog park. Fully fenced with double-gate entrance (nice safety feature). Grass surface, generally well-maintained. Dogs of all sizes share the same space (no separate small dog area). Surrounding park has children's play area and tennis courts — good multi-purpose stop for families with dogs.

Greer Park Dog Park Palo Alto

~8 min 🐕 Off-leash Grass / dirt ~0.12 acres

1098 Amarillo Ave, Palo Alto

Small but well-loved. Separate large/small dog areas, water fountains, seating. Best for quick off-leash sessions rather than extended romps.

Hoover Park Dog Park Palo Alto

~8 min 🐕 Off-leash Gravel / dirt ~0.14 acres

2901 Cowper St, Palo Alto

Tiny with the roughest surface — gravel and dirt that gets muddy after rain. The 3-foot fence is inadequate for larger athletic dogs. Shade trees make it pleasant on hot days. Separate small dog area, water station.

Nealon Park Menlo Park — Limited Hours

800 Middle Ave, Menlo Park (~5 min)

Off-leash in the baseball field area 8:00–10:00 AM only. Outside those hours, dogs must be leashed. Good for early risers but not practical for most visitors.

Dog-friendly hiking & walking trails

The Peninsula has exceptional hiking for dog owners — but the rules vary wildly. Some allow dogs on leash, one has an off-leash area, and the most iconic trail bans dogs entirely. For full trail details, see our Hiking guide and Parks guide.

⚠️ The #1 thing to know: The Stanford Dish trail does NOT allow dogs. Period. No exceptions (only service animals). This is Palo Alto's most iconic walk, and first-time visitors will absolutely want to bring their dog. They can't. Head to Arastradero or the Baylands instead.

Baylands Nature Preserve — Best Flat Walk Palo Alto

~10 min 🦮 On leash Paved / gravel Free

2775 Embarcadero Rd, Palo Alto

1,940-acre marshland preserve — the largest undisturbed salt marsh on the Bay. 15 miles of flat, easy trails perfect for dogs of any age or fitness level. Paved and gravel paths. Great birdwatching and stunning bay views. Very little shade — bring water for both you and the dog. See our Parks guide for trail details.

Pearson-Arastradero Preserve — Best Hill Hike Palo Alto

~10 min 🦮 On leash Dirt trails Free

1530 Arastradero Rd, Palo Alto

The best on-leash hiking close to the property. 622 acres of rolling grassland, oak woodlands, a creek, and a small lake. 10+ miles of trails. Spring wildflowers are spectacular. Watch for deer, coyotes, and occasional bobcat. Most trails wide and well-maintained but exposed to sun.

⭐ Only Off-Leash Hiking

Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve Redwood City

~15 min 🐕 Off-leash area Dirt trails Free

Edmonds Rd, Redwood City

The only Mid-Peninsula preserve with a designated off-leash area — 17.5 acres accessible from the Cordilleras, Polly Geraci, and Blue Oak Trails. ~6 miles of trails total with oak hillsides and panoramic ridge views. Excellent spring wildflowers.

Important: The off-leash area is signed at entrances but not fully fenced. Dogs must have reliable recall. Outside the off-leash zone, dogs must be leashed.

Foothills Nature Preserve Weekdays Only

~15 min 🦮 On leash $6 non-resident

1,400-acre preserve with spectacular views — woods, lake, meadows. 15+ miles of trails. Dogs allowed weekdays only, always leashed. No dogs on weekends or city holidays — they will be turned away at the gate.

Windy Hill Preserve Portola Valley

~20 min 🦮 On leash Free

Panoramic views of coast and bay. Dogs on leash on all trails except Lost and Razorback. More elevation gain than Arastradero — good for energetic dogs. See our Sunset Spots guide.

Dog-friendly restaurants & dining

California law (AB 1965) allows restaurants to welcome dogs on outdoor patios. In practice, nearly every restaurant with outdoor seating tolerates dogs — but some are genuinely dog-welcoming. Here are the standouts. For full restaurant guides, see our Date Night and Dining guides.

Crepevine Palo Alto

~7 min 🌿 Spacious outdoor

367 University Ave, Palo Alto

One of the more generous outdoor seating areas on University Ave. Relaxed atmosphere and broad menu (crepes, salads, sandwiches, hearty breakfast). Reliable option with a dog in tow.

Critical warnings for dog owners

🚫 No dogs on the Stanford Dish. Dogs are strictly prohibited. No exceptions (only service animals). This is the #1 mistake visiting dog owners make. Head to Arastradero or the Baylands instead.
🚫 No dogs at Foothills on weekends. Dogs are allowed weekdays only, always on leash. Weekend visitors will be turned away at the entrance gate.
🍽️ Dogs are outdoor patio only. California law allows dogs on outdoor restaurant patios — not inside. Don't assume "dog-friendly" means indoor access.
☕ Café Borrone is closed Tuesdays. Plan accordingly — it's one of the best dog-friendly patios on the Peninsula.
🚗 Never leave dogs in a car. California law allows bystanders to break a car window to rescue an animal in distress, and you will be fined.
