Admit Weekend (April 2026)

A 2.5-day, on-campus program for newly admitted undergraduates and their families. About 1,200 admitted students and 1,500+ parents/guests attend. Students can stay overnight in dorms (Thu/Fri nights); parents need their own lodging. This is often a family's first visit to Stanford and the surrounding area.

2026 Dates & Key Details

Dates: Thursday, April 23 – Saturday, April 25, 2026. Registration deadline: April 12, 2026. Check-in: Thursday 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM at Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation. Free parking: Galvez Lot.

Key events: Dean's Welcome (Thu 3 PM), campus tours, academic department open houses, financial aid appointments, dining hall meals (complimentary for admits + guests at designated times), activities fair (Fri), ASURPS research symposium (Sat), and Parent Breakfast (Sat 8:30–10:00 AM behind Montag Hall).

What parents need to know

Book lodging immediately upon admission (late March). Hotels in Palo Alto and Menlo Park will sell out. Parents are welcome at most daytime events, including tours, open houses, and dining hall meals — badges are required.

The Stanford Parents' Club has a "Chat Table" on Thu/Fri for current-parent Q&A — genuinely useful for getting unfiltered advice. Financial aid appointments are available Thu–Fri for detailed questions.

Pro tip: Saturday wraps up by midday. Plan afternoon departure or extend your stay to explore the area — it's the perfect time to discover the Peninsula while deciding on Stanford. See our Visitor's Guide and Museums & Art guide for ideas.

New Student Move-In & NSO (September 2026)

The single most logistically intense day for Stanford families. All new undergraduates must move into their dorm rooms on a single designated day and be checked in by 5:00 PM. Parents are welcome for move-in and the Opening Convocation ceremony, but must say their goodbyes by dinner — students are then occupied with required NSO programming for the full week.

2026 Dates

Move-In Day: Tuesday, September 15, 2026. NSO Week: September 15–20, 2026. First day of Autumn Quarter: September 22, 2026. International Student Orientation (ISO): Move-in September 12; ISO runs September 12–15.

Move-In Day timeline

8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Move-In. Check in at Neighborhood Check-In Locations. Get room key and Stanford ID. All students must be checked in by 5:00 PM.
Morning
Help your student unload at the curb, then move your car immediately to Galvez Lot (free all-day parking). Move-In Day Volunteers help carry belongings.
10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Parents' Club welcome at Stanford Bookstore Patio, White Plaza. Coffee, Tree Mail, Stanford Family pin, self-guided walking tour map.
11:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Complimentary family lunch in your student's residence dining hall.
5:00 – 6:00 PM
Opening Convocation at Frost Amphitheater. Guest tickets required (order by September 1). Clear bag policy — no backpacks or large bags. Arrive by 3:30 PM for security and seating.
Post-Convocation
Traditional goodbye time. Students head to First Dinner and House Meeting (required).
6:45 – 8:15 PM
NSO Dinner with the Provost for parents and families at Arrillaga Center. Ticketed, often sells out. Ticket info sent over summer.
Critical — parking on Move-In Day: 30-minute temporary parking in residential lots while checking in. After unloading, move your car immediately to Galvez Parking Lot (free all day). Do NOT park at curbs during check-in — it blocks traffic.
After Move-In Day: Parents are welcome to visit campus and take self-guided tours, but students are occupied in required NSO programs the rest of the week. Do not make off-campus plans with your student during NSO.

What to bring for the dorm

Stanford rooms come furnished (XL twin bed, desk, chair, dresser). Students should bring: bedding (XL twin sheets or order a Bedding Kit from the Bookstore), toiletries, laptop, and a bike (or order from the Campus Bike Shop for pickup at Tresidder). Coordinate mini-fridge/microwave with your roommate. No open-heating-element appliances. No e-vehicles in dorms.

Parents' Club post-NSO social: After Convocation and the Provost Dinner, the Stanford Parents' Club often hosts an off-campus social for new families. It's a great way to meet other parents. Check stanfordparentsclub.org for details.
